Grow Your Family Child Care Income: Revisiting 5 Real Ideas That Work

We've discussed in the past some creative ways you can boost your income as a family child care provider.

You already do the hard part: caring for children, building trust with families, and running a business. Let’s revisit the question this summer: what if your child care program could also help you bring in extra income without adding a ton of extra work?

Here are five practical, tested ideas that real providers have used to boost revenue while staying focused on what matters most.

1. Host Birthday Parties on the Weekend

Your space is already safe, welcoming, and child friendly. Use it on weekends to host birthday parties. Many parents are looking for fun, affordable places to celebrate their child’s big day. Offer simple packages that include games, decorations, and snacks. It’s a great way to earn extra income and connect with new families.

2. Sell Branded Merchandise

T-shirts, tote bags, or even stickers with your logo can help build pride in your program and give families something fun to buy. These items are great for holiday gifts, special events, or everyday use. You can sell them at pick up time or even online with print-on-demand options that don’t require inventory.

3. Offer Extended Hours or Drop-In Care

Flexibility is a major need for working families. If you’re able, consider offering earlier drop-off, later pick-up, or occasional drop-in care. Even one or two extra hours a few days a week can bring in meaningful income while meeting a real community need.

4. Host Parent Workshops

You already support children’s development why not share your knowledge with parents, too. Offer short workshops on topics like behavior, sleep routines, or preparing for kindergarten. These can be in person or online. Charge a small fee, or offer them free to enrolled families as an added bonus that sets your program apart.

5. Add Tutoring or Homework Help

If you care for school-age children, you can offer tutoring or homework help during after-school hours. Parents appreciate the extra support, and children benefit from having a trusted adult guide them through their assignments. Offer this service as part of your regular program or as an add-on.

Make It Work for You

You don’t need to try everything at once. Start with one idea that feels like a natural fit. Use what you already have, your space, your skills, and your relationships, to grow your income in ways that feel doable and rewarding.

Small changes can lead to big impact.
